There hasn’t been many more of these flowers happening with the continual dry hot humid weather we’ve been having. Since taking this shot, Feb’s 1st-2nd week of extreme heat (reached 36 Cel inside our house one day, [meaning hotter 38-40 outside] when only forecast for 33Cel) with not one thunder storm or drenching rains in our area, the 4-5m tall blue green stem and leaves have been scorching and slowly turning more to green-yellow-brown.

In the 3rd week of Feb, 15-16th saw some reprieve finally with some heavy coastal showers at least, drenching and refreshing the thirsty landscape and cooling temp's down again.

Hope you enjoy this 'macro' version of the flower image. I certainly never tire of seeing them growing in our large tropical garden.

Greeting a new flame kissed with raindrops in the early morning sunrise light. This bulbous green creeper vine plant produces many rich and vibrant flaring ‘fire-flame’ flowers. The vines grow ‘wild’ usually over all other hosting plants in the garden but only during the hot tropical summer months.

Everything is refreshed after a very early morning tropical rain shower during our hot and humid 2011-2012 (much anticipated/delayed) ‘wet’ season.
Day/night temp’s fluctuate usually between 25 – 33 degrees Celsius.

You will only see these multiple bulbous green creeper vine plants with their rich and vibrant flaring ‘fire-flame’ flowers growing usually over all other plants in the garden at this time of year.

(The vampire sucking mozzies were pretty full on too!)

Vessel Scape, a subtle minimalist abstract artwork in mixed media, is my work entry for the 'Hidden Treasures', annual fundraiser Postcard Show, Cairns Regional Gallery, Dec.2nd - 11th. 2011.
Bids close 2.30pm for 3pm Auction Sunday 11th Dec.

Continuing on with my vessel theme for this annual event, this work investigates spatial and ethereal qualities, relationships between physical and non-physical realms, spaces between, states of stillness and an in-between knowing.

ART PRACTICE - Face to Face

While working, rustling amongst my collage bits and pieces today I pulled out this quote I'd jotted down on a small scrap piece of paper.

Why do people from an early age, stop and avoid creating any art?
Why do people say they cannot understand art but amazingly know what they 'like'?
Why do people turn their brain, heart, feelings off to their powerhouse of potential creativity in their lifetime?
Answer? Conditioning, emotions, illusions ~ from both within and from without. Barriers are built up, comfort and safety zones established.

It has been said, many times, 'It takes courage to create.'

Chosen here because it's a great reminder that we all need to 'tango', dance with our creative source, in a personal, individual way, face to face and learn from the experience.

Plato said ‘We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.’

And then, once we've had the courage to create our artworks, Picasso states "Art is never finished, only abandoned."

So we need to continually come face to face, come to the dance, over and over, keeping the creative rivers inside ebbing and flowing. The rewards? Living a life of infinite discovery, continuously turning straw into gold!

Theartwork Rhythm and Rhyme was made for the 'HiddenTreasures' Postcard exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery (their annualfundraiser) held Oct 23 - Nov.6, 2009.

About the2009 Exhibition
Approximately 105 invited artists were involved with all the works displayed inalphabetical order in single file around the room. On the finale nightFriday Nov 6, the closing silent bid time is at 7.30 pm. The last silentbidder's no. written on the bidding card displayed underneath the work will bethe new owner of this work. 50% of the finale bidding amount will be donated tothe Gallery.

Generallya fun social finale night though sometimes as witnessed in previous years, ismingled with some hissing and yes, even cat fights amongst friends and completestrangers towards the end, as people desperately try to get a last bid on afavoured artist's work or two, hoping to add to their art collection.

Symbol Typo's - 'How To' on a Keyboard

I've always wanted to know the 'how to' of typing symbols into the written language for added expression!

As a person who has had a life time experience of and affinity with the hand making/handling of fine artworks/materials, ie. papers, canvas, textiles, clay, pencils, paintbrushes, paints, glue/collage, needle and thread etc, the art of 'how to', of making the 'expressive' typo language symbols one sees posted in comments made all over the internet these days has always eluded me. Remnants of Presence

A Retrospective Blog

'Visible Traces', one of several works completed for the curated group exhibition Remnants of Presence, was shownat the new Sugarama Gallery, Australia Sugar Industry Museum, Mourilyan ( just south of Innisfail), Far North Queensland, 4 May - 29 June 2003.

This professional curated group exhibition, 12 months in the making, was a grand showcase of 19 artists work from the Innisfail, Mission Beach and Tully region.

Visible Traces

Artwork is a triptych of mixed media on canvas and is currently held in the artist's collection. Overall size: H.122 cm x W.170 cm

Mediums used:charcoal, pastel, gesso, watercolour, acrylic, oil, collage, leaves, fabric,papers – rice paper, cartridge, 300 gsm rag paper.

This universal symbolic image (my personal logo) embodies a summation of several areas in my creative artwork practice over the many years and relative to inner/outer transitory awareness. The intricate pattern/organic design stems from my exposure to observing and drawing inspiration from nature’s designs of natural tropical rainforest and beach environments, textile designing and printmaking; the vessel form from making both ceramic and fibre banana receptacles.

The symbolism develops, comes with continual exploration, new perceptual, intuitive and spiritual awareness in and from one’s art practice.

All because I seized the moment, took the opportunity and time to study and photograph one of nature's unique wonders offered in the early morning hours, first week in April, 2011. I took a 'few' (well many really!) photos in the early morn light over two consecutive days while 2 blooms lasted. You see one of them here.

Juxtapositions

One of my earlier oil paintings on canvas that I hold in my own artist collection. Original Size - H 805 mm x W 1005 mm x D 40 mm. Female figures were first drawn/painted directly from different life models onto canvas. Then the combination of images were further developed creating the colourful abstract composition.

The work image has been professionally documented and made available for giclee prints on demand at my two online printing sites.

'Tropical Inspirations' 1996-97

Medium - Fabric Paint

Technique - Hand screen-printed imagery using several stencil techniques & designs

i.e. Combination of paper stencil, photographic and wax screen designs.

Background

First half of 1996 I had attended 2 (10 x 3hr per week) Screen Printing Tuesday night courses at the new Screen Printing Studio (converted from an old tractor shed) located at the new developing Tanks Art Centre site, EdgeHill, Cairns. Rae O'Connell was the then newly employed coordinator/screen-printing instructor of the Studio by Cairns City Council. Rae had moved from Darwin where she had been operating her own successful textile design and screen-printing business.

Even though it was a long one hour plus drive from Innisfail to Cairns in the evening and then back again, (5 hours all up round total incl.class) I successfully went for two terms because I felt there was much more to learn and skills to develop even though the tutor Rae only covered and delivered the same basic level techniques each time. Having access to the equipment and the large printing table allowed me to produce designs for final individual products.

Applying for a RADF Project Grant
Eager to go another level, in the latter of 1996 I instigated and applied for a Regional Art Development Funded (RADF) project grant from the then Johnstone Shire Council and was successful. It involved employing Rae as the professional tutor and getting local community workshop participants to learn and apply screenprinting techniques and designs to a collaborative site specific artwork at Good Counsel College (GCC), Innisfail, Far North Queensland.

Workshops
I both coordinated and participated in the 6 x 2 days (weekends) screenprinting workshops, five of which were held at the Art room, GCC, Innisfail and the other to access equipment at the Screen-Printing Studio, Tanks Art Centre in Cairns. These were conducted during the months of October through to December, 1996.

Design Briefing
There was the initial design brief and concept process between the school principal, overseer tutor Rae O'Connell and participants. My overall concept design was chosen and the hard work commenced. It took approximately another 6 weeks after the workshops, by myself during the school holiday time, to finish off all sections and resolve the border for its final completion.

Eventual Hanging
The large screenprinted fabric was sent to a prof. framer in Cairns to be stretched, framed (without glass) with a rounded white lacquered profile moulding. Eventually it gets hung in the school's administration block but is later on removed to make way for a large official school wooden plaque of names! After some time sadly neglected in the admin's 'storage room', the school's Librian takes charge and makes claim to hanging Tropical Inspirations proudly in the Library's teaching room area where it can still be viewed today by the school's many students and teachers.

Another Perspective

Tropical Cyclone Yasi Feb2011 - Having been directly under and through this one 'in the dark' at the physical land level, getting an overview like this rain radar, helps my visual mind to grasp things more chronologically relative to the winds/rains experienced. This massive system passed over two weeks ago and has affected so many people's lives in so many varying degrees and vast ways.

The Weather Channel's rain radar shows Tropical Cyclone Yasi crossing the coast at Mission Beach, Queensland. Heavy rainfall can be seen to the south of the cyclone's centre as it makes landfall.

One cannot forget. Everyday, whether looking out a window of home or driving to work, one is reminded constantly by the visible views of ravaged, mangled, littered and scarred landscape. All still echos the sound and feel of those constant roaring full force winds, memories resonating, vibrating through one's being. It is all still raw and surreal.

It's Monday February 14, 2011. Here is an overview (literally) of what passed over and through us in Far North and North Queensland Feb Wed 2 - Thur 3, 2011.

Tropical Cyclone Yasi - Satellite and Radar Timelapse

This video shows Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi forming in the Coral Sea and heading for the Queensland coast as a category 5 storm before moving inland and weakening. Towards the end you can see it interacting with the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Anthony and feeding a large amount of moisture down the to South East of Australia. Also of note is that at the very begining of the sequence you can see Tropical Cyclone Bianca off the Western Australia Coast, and then Tropical Cyclone Anthony crossing the Queensland coast.

24 hours prior, it was the luck of the draw as to where exactly the eye would finally cross over the coast. Initial Navy charts showed landing point between Innisfail and Cardwell, then secondary stage reports predicted between Cairns and Innisfail which meant we were in for copping the worst of it.

One mutters 'oh shit, here we go again', having already gone through the category 5 eye of Cyclone Larry, in the early Monday morning hours March 20 2006 and remembering those pelting unrelentless winds/rain from both directions on our house and then experiencing the aftermath of destruction to our town/region.

The brain soon activates the adrenalin to start pumping into the bloodstream! Fight or Flee? My husband and I we are sticklers, more practical than emotional, we just get on with what we have to do, having both been brought up tough on isolated self-sufficient farms. Many Innisfailites I know flee'ed further south to Mackay or way out west, even to Winton, not wanting to go thru another Cat.5 for a 2nd time. Afterwards many found they were unable to travel back the same way, having to make long hour inland detours because of all the coastline highway road blockages.

At this point it was still a fair way off the coast, so one mentally plays out the game of 'wait and see' and hopes/prays for a better outcome! By late Wed. afternoon, after continually listening to the ABC radio update life-line reports, were we then only sure of our position to this massive system - once again to the northern side of the cyclone eye (moment of relief!). We would be only getting the powerful cat.5/4 westerly winds/rain. Just how close to the eye we would be was always a question in the back of my mind. We, being just 10 min. north of Innisfail and Mission Beach was like half an hour on the other side!

House/Yard Preparations
My husband had spent the last two days with chain saw in our yard taking out, pruning trees that caused any threat and cleaning up his 'accumulated stuff', with the help of our 20yr old daughter, under our highset house.
I had to batton down, secure the gallery premises in town on Tuesday pm/Wed am, as my eldest daughter told me Tues.8 pm that police were to lock down the town by Wed.10am, which later was to change back to 8am. Inside the house one made all necessary preparations for the night and days/weeks to follow. As our house structure, built in 1989, stood up to Larry, this was some reassurance but there is always some doubt running through one's mind of 'what if' the worst possibly happens.

With winds and rain now coming in force, at 7.35pm Wed. night we lost electricity. We could feel it's almighty power looming closer while directly East of us then, the eye still off the coast travelling slowly 30-35 kmph and constantly in a South-West direction. They said it was heading straight towards Mission Beach where it did hit and made landfall just prior midnight. All the while we were listening to our battery operated ABC local FM radio station who had people ringing in, telling the world of listening ears, of their cyclonic experiences.

By 10 o'clock that night I realized, while attending/monitoring the west end house louvre windows for water seepage, that these gusty winds/rain of TC Yasi, although very powerful and strong, were no where near the constant fierce extremity we had experienced while being in the direct path of TC Larry. Yasi was, as anticipated, of a much longer duration because of it's enormous diameter. Those further south were not so fortunate.

Between midnight and 2am we experienced several huge gust belts of almighty winds that shook our house in varying degrees. All the while, the wind noise continually 'roared' through our rainforest backyard, going like a high speed train. We heard several limbs of trees snap and break and checked with powered torches to see if anything had landed on shed roofs.

My husband, totally exhausted, went to sleep with our blessings around midnight, my daughter at 2 pm and I probably went about 3pm. from vague memory.

We came out of Yasi with no 'visible' damage done to our buildings. Quite unbelievable really. We still shake our heads in disbelief. The tropical garden and rainforest took a battering - the tall leaf stalks of the red torch heliconias now decapitated. From previous experience, mulberry trees will bear a crop of fruit after severe stress related conditions.

My eldest daughter and her family, in an Innisfail rented house, were not so lucky ~ with a leaking damaged roof three rooms were saturated with water. They are now going to move out of this house this week and into another rented house just a few doors down, it undamaged and with power. By moving she will no longer have to wait while being without any power, for a landlady to organize insurance quotes and get repairs done to a damaged roof and then for an electrician to check all her wet electricals out.

We did get house and content damage from Cyclone Larry 2006 and also from Cyclone Winifred (cat.3) Feb.1986 (my very first - then living in a rented house out at Bartle Frere.) It took nearly 2 years after Larry before our Insurance Co. was made to pay out all itemized cost damages to our property. In the meantime we had to keep replacing wind torn tarps on our leaking roof for nearly 2 years!

Nearly two weeks has passed since Yasi's overnight visit. It is hot and humid. Time drags on. It is hard to focus. There is still no electricity at home. It is life with a noisy generator used to pump our bore water, keeping our fridge and freezers cold, doing a washing load here and there, ironing some clothes and trying to stay cool without any overhead fans going. And at nightime one cooks on gas and showers by candlelight and torches. Some people have very big generators and Ergon Energy have been catching people out plugging them into the main power circuit of their houses, causing damaged power lines to be charged.

Around midday, electricity was finally restored to our home today. Fortunate to be home to make the changeover from generator to mains power.

Those worst hit areas ~ Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Tully, Cardwell region ~ continue the struggle and battle on.

Moonlight Sonata was one of the pieces I had the opportunity to learn to play on the piano while taking music lessons in my own time in the year of my Yr 12 - HSC school studies at Luther College. My Mum had decided for that year it was best for me to get away from the family home farm life and country school environment where things were not going so well and so had been sent off to Boarding school in the big city of Melbourne.

My new female music teacher gave me a new lease of life towards my practice, so unlike the rote learning old lady teacher whom I had been going to methodically for the past five years prior, every Tuesday lunchtime during my High School years. She never allowed me to have long fingernails. During holidays was my only chance of seeing, nuturing any nail growth, but it was always short lived.

I really like the tempo played in this version and the raw gutsy character sound of the piano. Remembering the era of Beethoven and that he went deaf, some other versions I've listened to on YouTube resonate to that of a packet of marshmallows!

2010 Dec.01 - Stormy Evening Skylines, Art Deco - Innisfail, Far North Qld.

I’ve been learning about, while creatively playing around with, a recently acquired software program, Photoshop Elements 6, that came with equipment I recently purchased.
This is my first video slideshow 2010 Dec.01 – Stormy Skylines, Art Deco – Innisfail with ‘untouched’ photos taken on dusk in the town where I work. I’ve captured several of the Art-Deco buildings in Rankin St., set against some dramatic and distinct stormy weather pattern changes, being experienced in this year’s tropical wet seaon in Far North Queensland. Photo shoot time was between 6.32pm - 7.06 pm.

The town finally does look beautiful ‘now’. It is because it’s taken four hard long years of building renovation and restoration work that’s been going on since we got ‘Larried’, ie. Cyclone Larry, a category 5/4, blew in back in early am. of 20th March 2006! Prior to that there was little pride or recognition being taken of the enormous amount of actual Art Deco architecture in the town which originally came about after the town’s literal destruction back in 1918 by another devastating Cyclone.

Thanks to a few amazing perservering ladies in this town who formed the Art Deco in the Tropics, Innisfail Inc. society back in 2002, the scenario has completely changed and given the town ‘a new focus’!

Last night I was immediately attracted to a facebook friend's post which simply went like this -
"I paint, dammit!" Ian Fairweather

After I read the follow up discussions with reference being made to Ian Fairweather's life and 'hypocritical' friends in some documentary, I just had to ask was there anywhere one could get this, if available.

And sure enough, as I suspected, the answer I got references back to the link on my blog post made July 27, 2009. ABC has now apparently produced a DVD of the TV documentary. Yeah!

So after ordering the product online last night, along with the amazing Shannon Lush's new book 'Stainless', I now (patiently) await 1-2 weeks for delivery of the goods.

Australian Artist Ian Fairweather

I have adored and drooled over Ian Fairweather's lifetime of art work since ... well I cannot really recall, but a long time ago now - more than any other artist in the history of this planet with Matisse coming in second at this point.

When the very few opportune times have arose to travel to Brisbane from the Far North, I have stood in front of his work displayed at the Queensland Art Gallery, for such long periods ... soaking in the multiple layers of paint and their contextual meaning, then only to walk away and turn right back again not wanting to take my eyes off them.

It was one of Ian's abstract artwork images that adorned the front cover of the very first magazine publication, Art and Australia, back in the 1963. He was definitely 'not popular' in the general social community consciousness at the time.

I have one only precious art book on Ian Fairweather and his work purchased well over a decade ago now. In recent years there has been no books available to purchase.
I was very excited when someone had posted this ABC1 Television Guide link on facebook today (27.07.09). Yet another generation is being inspired by this man's artistic and very creative genius.

RB Features to date.

Last night, for my own records, I listed in my Red Bubble journal most of the RB features I've received/remembered from over the last few months, while I have been more active there.

Reason being I've noticed Red Bubble is only showing records of the last 16 recent features (listed on a one pager) and then the older records just vanish! Also some of the groups' hosts are having a big clean up and dish to make things easier in their file land management.

Group Challenges on Red Bubble

Layered with Texture - Challenge: Extreme Mixed Media

The work Spiritual Journey was entered into a Red Bubble Group Challenge. The RB group set the challenge of Extreme Mixed Media. (Click on this link and you can view a total of 14 entries along with the challenge criteria and the final voting results.)

Materials: Mixed media - acrylic, pastel, fabric, linen thread, leaf, butterfly wing, banana fibre, paper.

Canvas support. Size: 8 x 6 inches.

Techniques: painting, drawing, collage, coiling and stitching, basketry assemblage.

The original work sold through one of the end of year fundraising Cairns Regional Gallery Postcard Exhibitions. Usually up to 100 selected regional artists are invited to exhibit in the show each year.

For those not familiar with the RB group set up, there is both an entry and voting time schedule put on each of the challenges by a volunteer group host. Those with the most votes usually get a feature on the group's front page and runners up, in the top 10, are listed and displayed on the challenge page.
*Note, an artist cannot vote for their own work and there are other codes of fair conduct to be respected by all those on the RB site.

It is a wonderful way to get artists involved, actively thinking about and displaying their 'best' work in various groups and for other community members too, to get involved, meeting and connecting with others.

Another artwork Sanguine Nude was entered into the Challenge - 2 Colours with Works on Paper group. This one had a much larger total number of 58 works entered.

Size: 76×56 cm (30×22”)

Description: Worked directly from a life model in my studio gallery, this work combines both drawing and painting skills. I have a love/passion for embellishing, building up a surface with both actual and implied textural qualities.

Also Sanguine Nude earned a Monthly June feature at the home page of the group Life Session Expressions. This was achieved by being voted in the 'top ten' of a challenge for 'No. Favouritings' - see here.

It is indeed a pleasure, after many years of solitary art practice in an isolated regional rural community in Far North Queensland, to have the tools and to be able to be involved in marketing oneself directly via the internet, to show work that would otherwise probably never be seen except by a select few.

The work Dual Splendour (below) was painted for total right side brain relaxation mode back in Jan.2006, after a very busy lead up to Christmas retail business period. Usually I work in 'hidden discovery' non-objective mode for non-preordained experimental compositional results but in this instance I've allowed myself to work quite prescriptively here, with a predetermined photographic image taken from my recent rose shoot series.
Listening to my inner instincts I had a strong desire to paint with oils, to try out a warm/cool dual under painting approach and incorporate a build-up of translucent glazes for their rich luminosity. On completion it was interesting to note that people who knew of my previous creative art work habits had no idea I had painted this work. Being in my retail shop people had asked me “who was the artist?” (:-) I know I am very capable of painting and drawing realistically.

After university and years of a creative art practice and art teaching, creativity, with all its challenges and rewards, has infused and permeated my whole being, like oxygen is required in the blood it supports and maintains my life and flows continually, fluently through the positive higher energy veins of this universe.

Exhibited Feast of the Senses, Innisfail and was jury accepted into the Cairns Art Society Inc Annual Art Exhibition held Cairns Regional Gallery, where it was positioned in a prime position at front entrance. (Note of interest - I actually was awarded a 'commended' for another work entered/accepted which was in the 'abstract' section)

Background: Heavily perfumed these roses were so ready for the picking. A gorgeous variety of roses were grown that year by my husband (he goes through phases) during the cooler winter months of our Far North Queensland tropical climate, in tubs up off the ground (because it rains so much) in our rainforest backyard near Innisfail. I arranged and photo documented many of the different roses for future artwork reference material. My painting time and a rose series was stopped short with Cyclone Larry's devasting visit in March that same year.

Concept: In this work, the concept of duality is explored at various levels, such as: in the division of textures (smooth and rough); the warm and cool underpainting tones used on each half of the canvas; bright sunlight and cast shadow, with the complimentary contrast of magnificent fleshy orange, round spiraling rose petals branching out into full bloom in the foreground, to jagged edges and silhouetted dark blue/green cast shadows in the background.

Intimate Encounter - Down the Fence Line

An incident encountered 7/02/08

One late afternoon I was briskly walking along, on my way around to the loo located at the back of the building of where I work in Innisfail, Far North Queensland. All of a sudden, the keys I held in my right hand flung out of my grasp. Stunned, in shock and disbelief, I had instantly felt a sharp piercing pain on the side of my little finger. I didn't know what had just stung me but had my suspicions as I looked around in the man-made built area where there were no clues immediately visible. As the pain intensified and knowing I have little immunity to such insect bites, I picked up my keys and rushed off to get some 'Stop Itch' cream from the chemist across the street. This cream I find works miracuously for me, minimizing both pain and swelling.

Afterwards, and still needing 'to go' you know where, I returned to the area cautiously to try and unfathom the mystery. Ah ha, further down the fence line, about 3 meters along from where I was stung, there going unnoticed was a little hive of busy territorial aggressive Paper wasps building their nest discreetly underneath the pole rail of the fence line. I have only ever been bitten once before by one of these kind since my move to Qld and you never forget it.

How would I describe my work?
The work is abstract, spiritual, intrinsic and may be labelled as Remodernist and Archetypal Expressionism. Using multiple/mixed mediums, connections, relationships and unity are explored through visual language elements, symbology, between one’s inner-self (soul/spirit/life-force/essence), psyche and outer world. Notions of passage, transition/change, duality, reflection, containment, synthesis/fusion are contemplated and reflected upon.

Medium: Acrylic, threads, rice paper on canvas.
Brief Description: A subtle layer of gold threads has been stitched on to represent spirit passage and mediation between the transient forces and one's reality.

Brief: Acrylic and textured layers have been built up in a multiple page layout composition in reference to my 'Book of Threads', a process visual art diary. Symbolic meanings are explored through the pages, X's, multi-generational vessels, channels, stitched threads, colours and the transitional floating leaf.
