Tropical Fusions (Panels x 4)

Tropical Fusions (Panels x 4) by Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch

Tropical Fusions – all 4 panels together – as a united whole.
The original artwork was an experimental art ‘potpourri’ involving techniques of drawing, collage, opaque and transparent glazing (painting), layering and then even more overlaying, cutting and dividing.

Tropical Fusions (Panels x 4)

by

Mixed-media used: pencils – graphite, charcoal, pastel, oil, coloured; soft pastels, impasto gel (acrylic medium), netting, papers – rice, cartridge; natural processed fibres – bagasse (the crushed sugar cane fibre stems); water-based screen-print ink.
Initial work support: 300gsm Arches rag paper – original sheet size 770 × 570 mm – which was divided into quarters toward final completion, then mounted onto four separate canvas panels with a slim green/charcoal/ black edging finish (each size 385 × 285 mm) and grouped/framed as a whole unit.

Original work was:
  • Inspired by nature.
  • For the Group Exhibition: Cross Currents, 2002, Sugarama Gallery, Mourilyan, QLD.
  • Also exhibited: 2002-03, Year of the Outback DPI Flying Arts; (Work was selected for the Flying Arts TOURING Exhibition Regional QLD.)
  • In the artist’s collection.
  • KMP©2002, ©2004, ©2014.
Inspiration/influences
Overall compositional imagery was inspired/influenced from nature drawing/painting studies direct from my local surrounding Far North Queensland tropical environment such as the capturing of:
  • undulating strata layers, rhythms and patterns from the telling timeline surfaces of palm tree trunks
  • Leaves – both actual and implied: of leaf fall, Native Hibiscus Tiliaceus (cottonwood) dried leaves plus others
  • Palm seeds
  • Butterflies and wings – both actual and implied: of the Cairns Birdwing and other
  • Seasonal atmospheric elements and Moon cycles
  • Earthy oxide palettes – of red iron, Indian red, yellow ochre, white, terra-verte, charcoal and blue – of soils, sands, sky, barks, plants, leaves etc.
  • Vessel shapes based on my own fibre receptacle forms
  • Symbology plays an overall important role in the total work.

Thanks for visiting.

Prints available at my RedBubble Gallery

I am finally seeing a sparse one or two isolated cluster groups of these lovely pink orchid tree (Dwarf Bauhinia monandra) flowers blossoming in our rural home garden, near Innisfail, Far North Queensland, Australia.

Unique flower features
  • Butterfly-like
  • Every cluster appears unique in composition
  • The Dwarf Bauhinia Monandra flowers open first as red/rose with yellow tips
then quickly change to a very sweet pink, then hold the pink
  • A rare variety ~ develops pink orchid-like flowers with red blotches or dots, the uppermost one splotched with deeper red, yellow or yellow-margined
  • The petals are spreading, each about 2.5 – 4 cm long
Tree’s characteristic features
  • Small, rounded-crowned tree with smooth gray bark.
  • Twin lobed leaves which are 4 to 6 inches across and cleft almost to the middle, giving the leaf the shape of a hoof print.
  • Native of Burma
Since the recent late wet season’s few days of heavy rainfall (delivered by Ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald last week in January) a couple more have bloomed, but they are only still appearing in very limited quantities. Perhaps our tropical soil is not acidic enough but the tree plants are still relatively young!
I am observing their progress with keen interest.

Twilight Zone, Innisfail 21.03.2012

Twilight Zone
Wed.pm 21st March, 2012.

After a week of oppressive overcast dark grey skies, continual rains and intense flooding throughout Far North Queensland, one begins to think if it will never end.

Well, the blue skies did finally open wide up the day after a huge Low pressure system blew over/through us from the North/North-West and kept moving on further south creating more havoc in its pathway.

On this evening we were treated to the most amazing intensely rare and rich varied coloured sunset. I managed to capture some shots but only after the sun had already set, in the twilight zone period, which I now share here with you. Enjoy.

"Flow Between 1" by Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch | RedBubble

"Flow Between 1" by Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch ©2012
What:  Mixed media work: compressed charcoal, acrylic, paper collage on 200gsm cartridge paper.
The original work is on size paper 420 x 297 mm (A3).
Note ~ The space around the image here has been cropped down slightly for reproduction printing purposes.

Method: The compositional work employs a combination of gestural, contour drawing/painting techniques and has been worked directly from a life model.

About:  In the same life drawing session I completed several similar quick session life drawings that were all composed/grouped together on the one large sheet of cartridge paper. I later cut out and collaged what I thought the most successful images onto each their own larger A3 paper sheet  The delicate compositional balance of spacing around each of these images requires it's own problem solving.

My subject approach focuses on depicting dynamic energies through application of quick gestural, contour mark making and accentuation on spatial relationships ie. between figure-ground, negative-positive, ambiguity, unification, spaces between.

Other Artistic Points
The principle of figure/ground is one of the most basic laws of perception.
'Gestalt' is a psychology term which means "unified whole".

"Togetherness " by Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch | RedBubble

Everything is refreshed after a very early morning tropical rain shower during our hot and humid 2011-2012 (much anticipated/delayed) ‘wet’ season.
Day/night temp’s fluctuate usually between 25 – 33 degrees Celsius.

You will only see these multiple bulbous green creeper vine plants with their rich and vibrant flaring ‘fire-flame’ flowers growing usually over all other plants in the garden at this time of year.

(The vampire sucking mozzies were pretty full on too!)

Photo Shoot taken - 1 Feb.2012 Time 6:11:35 AM
Location – Innisfail, Far North Queensland, Australia.
