Inspiration/influences

Overall compositional imagery was inspired/influenced from nature drawing/painting studies direct from my local surrounding Far North Queensland tropical environment such as the capturing of:
  • undulating strata layers, rhythms and patterns from the telling timeline surfaces of palm tree trunks
  • Leaves – both actual and implied: of leaf fall, Native Hibiscus Tiliaceus (cottonwood) dried leaves plus others
  • Palm seeds
  • Butterflies and wings – both actual and implied: of the Cairns Birdwing and other
  • Seasonal atmospheric elements and Moon cycles
  • Earthy oxide palettes – of red iron, Indian red, yellow ochre, white, terra-verte, charcoal and blue – of soils, sands, sky, barks, plants, leaves etc.
  • Vessel shapes based on my own fibre receptacle forms
  • Symbology plays an overall important role in the total work. More info on this can be found at my home website ~ www.kerrynmadsen-pietsch.com

Each of the panel works are being made available as 'prints on demand' for the first time via

The artwork Rhythm and Rhyme was made for the 'Hidden Treasures' Postcard exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery (their annual fundraiser) held Oct 23 - Nov.6, 2009.

Photo - First night session of the work in progress in my studio gallery.
Work in progress in my studio gallery.

About the 2009 Exhibition
Approximately 105 invited artists were involved with all the works displayed in alphabetical order in single file around the room.  On the finale night Friday Nov 6, the closing silent bid time is at 7.30 pm. The last silent bidder's no. written on the bidding card displayed underneath the work will be the new owner of this work. 50% of the finale bidding amount will be donated to the Gallery.
Generally a fun social finale night though sometimes as witnessed in previous years, is mingled with some hissing and yes, even cat fights amongst friends and complete strangers towards the end, as people desperately try to get a last bid on a favoured artist's work or two, hoping to add to their art collection.

Rhythm and Rhyme is available in various print formats at my RedBubble Gallery.

The work includes 'embossed' textured rice paper I printed and was collaged in several areas (mainly bottom and right hand side areas) on the centre panel.

Preview Publication
A preview article was published in the Arts Nexus magazine about Remnants of Presence

Publication 2003 RoP_p12.Arts Nexus.No.50
Non-digital documentation records of photos and a video do exist of this very successful exhibition but most of these have yet to see their conversion into relevant digital media production forms.
Here is a 'small' image I have to hand on file, taken on the opening day.  The work in the foreground is titled 'Treasure Trove', an sculptural installation completed by yours truly with a collaboration involvement from all participating RoP artists, with each supplying representative 'personal' object pieces.

Let 'that' memory go

"This is the laughing Buddha! When they see that which was unreal this laughter comes"

“…Ultimately, it is freedom from even the concept of freedom.

It is the end of striving. We put all our attention, all our efforts,

into becoming the best someone we can be. That is natural, that is

the whole story of mankind. But it is not freedom.

By all means live the highest expression you can. Changing what you feel

does not serve your freedom; follow your heart’s promptings,

but do not take the expression to be a definition of the Self.

Enjoy, with gratitude, your life – as a gift from Life, as an expression

of God, as the dance of the cosmos – while remaining throughout

as the formless seer. The Sage looks into a mirror at the pictures

appearing as himself, but he is not confused.

He remains the unalterable Being into the shrine of emptiness.”

This universal symbolic image (my personal logo) embodies a summation of several areas in my creative artwork practice over the many years and relative to inner/outer transitory awareness. The intricate pattern/organic design stems from my exposure to observing and drawing inspiration from nature’s designs of natural tropical rainforest and beach environments, textile designing and printmaking; the vessel form from making both ceramic and fibre banana receptacles.

The symbolism develops, comes with continual exploration, new perceptual, intuitive and spiritual awareness in and from one’s art practice.
  • Symbolism: The body, a vessel, for containment of thoughts/desires, upside down – reflection/duality; openings, channels, passages act for giving/receiving, positive action/change, inner/outer transit, pathways/directions; movement, transition; the leaf as a transporter, carrier of dreams, aspirations; parallels, mythical/psychic, reality/illusion, inner/outer, boundaries, earth/nature, spirit/matter; juxtaposition relational awareness – visible/invisible, negative/positive spatial elements, forces, energies; balance, fusion, action, change, harmony, flow, interconnection, growth, life, submersion.

Juxtapositions

Photography Prints

One of my earlier oil paintings on canvas that I hold in my own artist collection.  Original Size - H 805 mm x W 1005 mm x D 40 mm.  Female figures were first drawn/painted directly from different life models onto canvas. Then the combination of images were further developed creating the colourful abstract composition.

The work image has been professionally documented and made available for giclee prints on demand at my two online printing sites.

Collaborative Screen-Printing Project '96-'97 (Part 1)

'Tropical Inspirations' 1996-97
Medium - Fabric Paint
Support - Cotton Sateen Fabric
Technique - Hand screen-printed imagery using several stencil techniques & designs
i.e. Combination of paper stencil, photographic and wax screen designs.
Height 1200 mm x Width 2000 mm

Background

First half of 1996 I had attended 2 (10 x 3hr per week) Screen Printing Tuesday night courses at the new Screen Printing Studio (converted from an old tractor shed) located at the new developing Tanks Art Centre site, EdgeHill, Cairns. Rae O'Connell was the then newly employed coordinator/screen-printing instructor of the Studio by Cairns City Council.  Rae had moved from Darwin where she had been operating her own successful textile design and screen-printing business.

Even though it was a long one hour plus drive from Innisfail to Cairns in the evening and then back again, (5 hours all up round total incl.class) I successfully went for two terms because I felt there was much more to learn and skills to develop even though the tutor Rae only covered and delivered the same basic level techniques each time.  Having access to the equipment and the large printing table allowed me to produce designs for final individual products.

Applying for a RADF Project Grant
Eager to go another level, in the latter of 1996 I instigated and applied for a Regional Art Development Funded (RADF) project grant from the then Johnstone Shire Council and was successful. It involved employing Rae as the professional tutor and getting local community workshop participants to learn and apply screenprinting techniques and designs to a collaborative site specific artwork at Good Counsel College (GCC), Innisfail, Far North Queensland.

Workshops
I both coordinated and participated in the 6 x 2 days (weekends) screenprinting workshops, five of which were held at the Art room, GCC, Innisfail and the other to access equipment at the Screen-Printing Studio, Tanks Art Centre in Cairns. These were conducted during the months of October through to December, 1996.

Design Briefing
There was the initial design brief and concept process between the school principal, overseer tutor Rae O'Connell and participants. My overall concept design was chosen and the hard work commenced. It took approximately another 6 weeks after the workshops, by myself during the school holiday time, to finish off all sections and resolve the border for its final completion.

Eventual Hanging
The large screenprinted fabric was sent to a prof. framer in Cairns to be stretched, framed (without glass) with a rounded white lacquered profile moulding. Eventually it gets hung in the school's administration block but is later on removed to make way for a large official school wooden plaque of names!  After some time sadly neglected in the admin's 'storage room', the school's Librian takes charge and makes claim to hanging Tropical Inspirations proudly in the Library's teaching room area where it can still be viewed today by the school's many students and teachers.
